My computer has survived my onslaught of crazy remedies!

Yes..  No longer will there be a ton of posts on how crappy my life is because my computer is not working, or because I did something stupid to ‘fix’ it!  I will have blissful posts about fairies and dragons and how elves ride hippogryphs!

Okay, maybe not.

But I am VERY glad that I got everything working and did not have to enlist the help of a professional.

I am thankful for all of you out there patient enough to read through these first few posts, and hope that you will bear with me through the next few days where I sort out just what Vista can and cannot do with out (as to free up some hard drive space), and enjoy my sense of humor – even though it’s been fairly lacking these past few weeks…

I appreciate it, and hope to fix that ASAP!

Thanks again, and I will have some more interesting posts tomorrow!

Woe is Me and my little PC March 4, 2009

I have always prided myself on being a pretty smart girl.  I may not have a ton of street smarts, but I learn things pretty quickly.  I am also one who expects immediate gratification when it comes to her computer  – which is why this has been such a crappy time for me!

After finally deciding to wait for the Vista CD-ROM to arrive, I left work and went to Walmart.  Exciting, I know.  On a whim, I walk by their Electronics area and browse for a bit – you know, ‘just to see what they have.’  What I saw were some pretty affordable DVD drives – both internal and external.

I left the area and went to do my shopping.  Dog food, chew toys for the new puppy and his parents, some juice for the house.  The usual.  But my thoughts remained on the drive.  My conversations with my techie friends had pointed out that my problem with the internet would (more than likely) be fixed by the upgrade to Vista – however, I couldn’t get the Vista to be recognized.  So, if I could get the DVD to read, I would be free from this mess.  Sounds good, right?

The installation went fine, but when I had to adjust it a bit, all Hell broke loose!  I now have NO icons on the main monitor, and no power or info is going to the second monitor.  UGH

After some tears and cursing, I gave up.  I am going to give it one more shot tonight and if that doesn’t work – professionals.  That is definitely the LAST thing I want to do, but so be it.

Monday Morning… Again February 23, 2009

Good day!

After a relaxing and productive weekend, it is again, Monday.  As usual, I have high hopes for the week!  My running club begins on Saturday, so I am going to try to prepare for it for the next five evenings.

The diet is back on track after a weekend dip.  At least, I think it is.  For breakfast I did the usual – turkey meat and quiche cup.  However, the lunch for today is a chicken salad on romaine.  That’s fine and dandy, but she made it with sour cream instead of mayo.  Now, I know that mayo should be limited, but I can’t find any info on the sour cream…  But I figure I will just eat it and  keep on track for the rest of the day and hope for the best.

I spoke with the future brother in law in law and yes, I know I wrote that twice.  It’s the brother in law of my fiance.  I know, it makes no difference in his relationship to me, but it’s fun to say!  So, I spoke with him while he and his family were in ‘Nawlins’ for Mardi Gras (lucky bas.. guy), and he told me that he has a disk that I can borrow that may be able to fix my computer.  I am hoping to High Heaven that it works.  I feel like I’m wasting my new 20″ flat screen on games that are not World of Warcraft.

I actually found my edition of The Temple of Elemental Evil and installed that yesterday to get a fix on some sort of gaming.  It wasn’t the same.  And it took me forever to remember just how to play it!  I still don’t have everything down…

But at least I have my laptop and my phone.  It’s nice to be able to twitter and post things to Facebook while waiting in the bank line.  I swear, if I had an iPhone, it would never be torn from my hands!

OH! On a final note, I believe that the fiance and I have finally set a date to be wed!  Provided the church is available, and the Priest that we want to officiate the ceremony is willing, August 22nd will be the goal date!

I almost had him for a Halloween wedding, which would have been cool because we could celebrate my sister’s birthday, have the wedding, go on our honeymoon, and celebrate MY birthday – all in the same week!  But then again, it’s enough stress with just the wedding…  YEAY!!!

South Beach Day 2 February 17, 2009

First off, let me state that I am very proud of myself for being able to go out to dinner last night and behave on the South Beach Diet!

I had a couple of mushroom caps – minus the stuffing (which was SOO Hard for me!  It smelled scrumptious!), a tossed salad with oil & vinegar (I picked off the carrots), a New York strip steak and veggies.

I am really pleased that I didn’t even touch the bread that was brought to the table!  Although, I *did* ask my fiance to describe each and every bite.  That lasted for one bite.

It is just not easy for me to turn down bread; Especially warm, crusty outside, soft and buttery inside, good old fashioned bread…

So today, I had the usual breakfast – the quiche cup and a slice of turkey and for a snack – the mozzarella string cheese.  For lunch, we have green pepper cups stuffed with cottage cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers and a little side salad (lettuce and cukes).  I’m loking forward to it because I’m beginning to get hungry!

I think for dinner I will cook the chicken in my fridge.  It needs to be cooked and soon!

ON a different note!!!  The computer work is at a stand still until I can get my friend from Atlanta, or my fiance’s brother in law – also from the Atlanta area, on the phone to determine what the problem is or could be.  I just hate that the Vista DVD won’t even read!  That was probably the last thing I could do on my own that wouldn’t make  me think I have completely killed my system.

I wish I could fix it myself, but that is just not possible when it comes to the programming and such.  Or corrupted files.  How do I figure out what file is corrupted, how it got that way, and how to go about fixing it?  Yikes!  I have got to hand it to those Computer Technicians out there that really know what they are doing!  As for the people that came out to my house – they need some extra schooling, in my opinion.

Hopefully my laptop will still be going when I get home so I can tweak my blog a bit.  I have put a couple links on Twitter over the past couple of days, to drum up some visits and some contsructive criticsim, but nothing much has happened yet…  If you see anything that you would like to comment on, or just remark upon, I would be greatful!  I don’t bite.. often.   =)

The Internet Hates Me February 11, 2009

Last night, instead of going to my kickboxing class like a good girl, I went directly home and decided that I was going to attack this whole computer thing.

That was my first mistake.

I walked in, kissed my fiance, took off my shoes and grabbed the phone.  I first called my service provider.  They remotely reset my modem and said all was fine.  They saw the same IP address I did, and I would need to call Linksys to actually get online via the router.  Okay, that phone call was quick enough, why not try the second call?

That was my second mistake.

I called Linksys.  I got a very nice person who needed me to pull my big ol’ desk away from the stinkin’ wall (without having anything on it topple off and break) so that I could hook the cable directly to my computer and modem, rather than through the router.  Easy enough.

From there, he tells me that I have an invalid IP address and that I would need to call my provider again because there is nothing further that they can do.

I did as I was told and called them back.  They thought it was a firewall or Norton Antivirus that was keeping me from getting online.  So, I let him know that I had already closed the firewall, but was unsure how to stop Norton from running.  He didn’t know either and told me to call Norton.

Norton wanted money in order to tell me how to close it down.

I played around with it myself and figured it out.  (Not all blondes are dumb!)  So I called my provider again.  This guy was quite nice and very easy to speak to.  I was happy.  So, he went through everything he could think of to fix it and nothing worked.  He had to schedule a tech to come out this morning.

I was ecstatic!  Someone was going to come out and actually see what I was talking about and fix it!

::sigh::  I was so very wrong.  First they tried to say that the wiring was done incorrectly (even though their company was the one that wired it!), then they mentioned that for some reason it’s not recognizing websites, only IP addresses.  So, I couldn’t just go to Google or Facebook – I would have to put in their IP address.  Yeah, like I know these numbers off the cuff!

So, their suggestion to me is to re-load Windows.  This is great.  Why? Because I never got a Windows disk.  It came pre-loaded onto my PC!  So now I’ve got my fiance making calls and looking around for someone who may have a disk or information on how to go about fixing my internet problems…

This definitely stinks.  Part of me feels like I should just go get a new computer.  The rest of me wishes I could afford a Mac!!
